A LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

As The Hook's Editor in Chief Sammy Ferris prepares to head off to college, she reflects on her time at The Hook.

Dear Country Day,

I am Sammy Ferris, the previous Editor-in-Chief of The Hook from the spring of 2017-the spring of 2018. From now on, Mimi and Rachel will be the go-to girls for all of your Hook needs as well as the rest of the growing and wonderful team.

I want to thank every person who has written for The Hook, especially this year. As a team, we worked to create five vibrant, diverse editions that share the CCDS experience and students’ voices. The growth of this platform indicates the power and passion present here that I will miss the most as I leave it.

The teachers at Country Day bring light and guidance that very few students have access to in Charlotte, in North Carolina, and in the United States as a whole. I want to encourage all of you to soak in the information and experiences in and out of the classroom because as I look back on my four years, those are the things I remember. It sounds cliché. I know. But, I really have no idea what I got on my first bio test or on my sophomore year history research paper. The people that I have gotten to know, the pieces of literature I have read, and the articles I have helped craft are vivid in my mind.

We, as students in a privileged community, need to strive to utilize the positions we hold to project our voices and to get excited about opportunities we have. You never know how the announcement you make at Morning Meeting is going to make a new freshman feel. You never know how the comment you make to your friend in passing will shape how they see themselves. You never know how the article you submit to The Hook will spur inspiration, happiness, and creativity to those who read it.

I cannot depict how grateful I am for every one of you giving me space to explore who I am. The love I feel on this campus is unimaginable. The next one, two, or three more years that you all will share will be formative, at times horrific, and extremely rewarding and nurturing. Embrace them all!

Let the Sprit Week drama and comradery continue…I wish you all the best of luck with that and all of your endeavors! Come visit Chapel Hill anytime—I’d be happy to have you.

Xox,

Sammy Ferris, Class of 2018
